From Friday, Aug. 12th to Sunday, August 14th, roughly 60 participants converged on the Jack L. Boyd Outdoor School in Fish Camp, CA (about 5 minutes from the entrance to Yosemite National Park) for a weekend of intensive karate training.
The 28th Annual Sierra Camp, held in memory of Hanshi Vincent Cruz- who passed away in December- was an action-packed weekend full of camaraderie, informative training, and memories. Participants and Sensei came from as far away as Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Florida, and Denver, as well as many from all over California.
In light of Hanshi Cruz's recent passing, Hanshi's Rick Llewelyn and Robert Stevenson lead the camp with heavy hearts, but with eyes towards continuing to build on Hanshi Cruz's legacy and teachings. We practiced Shime kata, one of Hanshi Cruz's most important katas, on Saturday, with intense focus on detail, body dynamic and power- with, I think, each one of us hearing Hanshi's voice in our heads telling us to "get lower", "faster", "relax", "do it again"....
Hanshi Cruz set a standard for excellence in detail, performance, and human potential that we shall all strive to live up to.
If you attended this year's camp, please fill out this survey to offer your feedback. Thank you!
